AIR POLLUTION TAKES EIGHT MONTHS OFF YOUR LIFE..

AIR pollution is taking eight months off the life of every UK resident, a damning report said yesterday.

The Government study said smoke, chemicals and particles are causing health problems.

Benzene from petrol is linked to cancers. Sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide from industry and cars are blamed for lung and heart disorders.

Tiny "particulates" of soot, dust and dirt in the air contribute to breathing difficulties.

The report, Air Quality Strategy, added that ministers had not done enough to cut pollution, which blights the lives of millions.

It said: "It is estimated that the level of man-made particulate air pollution experienced in the UK in 2005 would be expected to reduce average life expectancy by up to about eight months."
